Chelsea make contact for Portugal and FC Porto star Diogo Costa amidst Manchester United interest
Premier League rivals Chelsea have made contact with FC Porto over a deal for Portugal star Diogo Costa amidst interest from Manchester United, according to Spanish outlet Relevo (h/t Express).
The Red Devils are closely monitoring the 23-year-old. However, it is the Blues who have taken the first step in initiating a conversation. But the Old Trafford side are still very much in the race.
Unfortunately, the shot-stopper recently signed a new long-term contract at the Primeira Liga outfit. And his deal now includes a release clause worth around £64 million.
However, Costa’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has approached Porto to convey an interest in the goalkeeper’s move away from the club in the summer of 2023. The super agent is optimistic about getting his client a move to the Premier League or any other top-flight side.
The Portugal international had his breakout season in the previous campaign with the Dragoes. And this term, the 23-year-old has continued his fine form under Sergio Conceicao.
The shot-stopper is currently with the national side in Qatar at the World Cup. He started in Os Navegadores’ 3-2 win over Ghana in their opening fixture at the prestigious tournament.
For now, United have David de Gea manning the goalposts as the number one. The Spaniard has been in fine form for the Red Devils since last season. However, his future at the club remains uncertain.
The 32-year-old is in the final year of his contract at the Old Trafford side. While we can extend the former Atletico Madrid star’s deal by a further year, the club are still contemplating their decision.
Under Erik ten Hag, United have preferred to play out from the back. Unfortunately, De Gea leaves a lot to be desired in that department. While the Spaniards’s performances in the last few months have merited an extension, it would be wise for the club to look at a deal for Costa first.

They would also hope that Costa’s glaring mistake against Ghana was a one-off moment. He switched off in the last few seconds of the match and nearly gifted the African country an equaliser. Those who see him play regularly would know that this is unlike him and he is rather sure with the ball at his feet.
