Cristiano Ronaldo expected to leave Manchester United in the January transfer window
Manchester United expect Cristiano Ronaldo to leave the club in the January transfer window, according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg on Twitter (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The hierarchy of the club anticipate the Portugal international to part ways with the Red Devils in the winter. Thus, the upper management is looking to strengthen Erik ten Hag’s squad come next year.
The Old Trafford side are already looking for a replacement for the 37-year-old. And the five-time Ballon d’Or winner could have the option to return to where it all started for him, Sporting CP.
Ronaldo made his return to United last year from Juventus. He had left the Red Devils in 2009 and joined Real Madrid. In Spain, the 37-year-old had several fruitful years.
Upon his return to Old Trafford in the previous campaign, the forward was one of our best players. He ended the 2021/22 season as our top goalscorer in all competitions.
However, under Ten Hag, Ronaldo has struggled for game time. His form in front of goal has not been great either. In 16 appearances in all competitions for United, the 37-year-old has found the back of the net just three times.
The former Ajax head coach has preferred Marcus Rashford or Anthony Martial in front of the Portugal international in the centre-forward role. However, the England international is currently our talisman this season.
Against Tottenham Hotspur, Ronaldo walked down the tunnel before the end of the game. Consequently, the forward was suspended for the fixture against Chelsea.

However, he has found himself back in Ten Hag’s plans recently. The 37-year-old was also handed the armband in the match against Aston Villa. But unfortunately, he has been underwhelming.
Thus, it remains to be seen whether the Portugal international stays at the club. If not, United will evidently need a suitable replacement in the squad.
