PSV Eindhoven director Marcel Brands suggests Manchester United target Cody Gakpo could leave next year
Marcel Brands has suggested that Manchester United target Cody Gakpo could leave PSV Eindhoven next year. However, the Eredivisie outfit’s director has ruled out a move for the 23-year-old in January.
The Red Devils are looking to bring the Holland international to the club in the upcoming transfer window, according to SportItalia journalist Rudy Galetti (h/t Manchester Evening News). However, it seems the Old Trafford side will have to wait a bit longer to be able to snap up the forward.
PSV took on Ajax in the Dutch top flight on Sunday (6 November) at the Johan Cruyff Arena. The Red and Whites managed to beat the Eredivisie champions 2-1, with Gakpo getting an assist.
Speaking to ESPN via Twitter (h/t MEN), Brands was adamant about the Holland international playing for PSV in the second half of the season. However, he hinted at the forward leaving in the summer of 2023.
“No, this is not Cody Gakpo’s last match against Ajax. Next year he will also play the match in Eindhoven against Ajax. If it will be his last away match with PSV against Ajax? Yes, that is a possibility.”
Gakpo has been one of the best players in Europe in terms of his numbers this season. In 23 appearances in all competitions for PSV, he has scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists.
Under the management of Manchester United icon Ruud van Nistelrooy, the 23-year-old has turned into a deadly forward. The Holland international has also turned into a key figure for Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands team.
United managed to bolster the frontline in the recent transfer window with the arrival of Antony from Ajax. The 22-year-old has had a decent start to his career in a red shirt, scoring three consecutive goals in his first three Premier League appearances.
Erik ten Hag also reunited with Lisandro Martinez in the summer of 2022. The Argentine centre-back has been one of our best players in the current campaign.
