Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar contacted by Manchester United for director of football role

Manchester United have contacted Edwin van der Sar to return to the club in the capacity of the director of football, according to Voetbal Primeur (h/t The Sun).

The former goalkeeper is currently the chief executive at Ajax. Over the years, the Red Devils have tried to get him several times. The Old Trafford side were interested in his services two years ago as well.

De Godenzonen have also lined up a replacement in case the 51-year-old leaves his post at the Eredivisie outfit. Ajax are considering appointing ex-player Danny Blind, the father of former United defender Daley Blind.

The Red Devils have seen quite an overhaul since last year. John Murtough was appointed as the first director of football at the Manchester-based club. And Darren Fletcher is currently the technical director.

Ed Woodward also stepped down in the previous campaign as the chief executive of United. And Richard Arnold replaced the investment banker in his role.

Now, the Old Trafford side look to add Van der Sar to their hierarchy. The Dutch national spent six successful seasons in Manchester between 2005 and 2011. The 51-year-old won two Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson.

The former goalkeeper and current United manager Erik ten Hag worked together at Ajax. And the Amsterdam-based club had a fruitful spell when the two were at the helm.

The Red Devils’ recent transfer window saw two players, Lisandro Martinez and Antony, from Ajax make their way to Manchester. The Eredivisie outfit have, over the years, developed many talented players who now ply their trade in Europe’s biggest teams.

It remains to be seen whether the Old Trafford side are able to entice Van der Sar back to the club. Fans would love to see the United hero return and help the side achieve the heights of the past.
