Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar gave a funny yet brutal reply to Altay Bayindir
Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar delivered a funny response as Altay Bayindir praised his legendary career. Bayindir is yet to make his United debut since signing for the Red Devils during the summer transfer window.
United manager Erik ten Hag has consistently deployed his first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana in every game this season. Since making his United debut this season, Onana has struggled with errors and inconsistencies in his performances.
The Red Devils have conceded 30 goals in all competitions this season, resulting in nine losses out of 18 matches. January’s Africa Cup of Nations will see the Cameroon international representing his country, creating an opportunity for Bayindir.
United signed Bayindir from Turkish side Fenerbahce for £4.3m during the summer transfer window. The 25-year-old made 145 appearances for the Turkish club, keeping 44 clean sheets and conceding 162 goals.
The Turkey international used an Instagram video (h/t Mirror) to reveal Van der Sar as his favourite United goalkeeper. He said:
“When I was younger, I watched a lot of Manchester United games. My favourite goalkeeper, I say this and Edwin van der Sar is a legend. I know him.”
The Dutch legend played for United under the reign of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Van der Sar set the world record for not conceding a league goal for 1311 minutes during the 2008-09 season.
Furthermore, he won four Premier League titles, two Champions League titles and two League Cups at Man United.
Van Der Sar caught the eye of the video and responded immediately in the comments section with a brutal take. He wrote:
“Hi Altay, will see you soon in Manchester and we will have a chat about goalkeeping but my favourite is still Andre as you will know!”
Van Der Sar and Onana collaborated at Ajax when the former served as the CEO of the Dutch club. The Cameroon goalkeeper enjoyed great success at Ajax under Ten Hag and Van der Sar.

Both Onana and Bayindir have huge shoes to fill as the United goalkeepers. The Red Devils have a rich history for extraordinary goalkeepers who etched their names in the club’s history books. Onana and Bayindir succeeded United legend David de Gea after the Spaniard’s 12-year successful stint at the club.
