Erik ten Hag explains Anthony Martial’s influence in Manchester United’s win against Liverpool
Speaking to MUTV after Manchester United’s sensational win against Liverpool as quoted by Manchester Evening News, Erik ten Hag has highlighted how Anthony Martial’s substitution helped influence the game against the Reds.
After a disappointing start to the season, Man United roared back in style by beating arch-rivals Liverpool and getting their first three points on board after suffering humiliating losses in the hands of Brighton and Brentford.
Manchester United won against the Reds, two goals to one with both Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford featuring on the scoresheet. Mohamed Salah did score a late goal for Jurgen Klopp’s men to no avail.
One player who did not start the game but had a considerable influence after coming on was Anthony Martial. The Frenchman set up the second goal with Rashford managed to slot home and put in an impressive shift.
Martial, who returned from his loan spell at Sevilla had a great pre-season under Erik ten Hag. However, an unfortunate injury that he suffered at the beginning of the season delayed his progress in the team.
Erik ten Hag brought the Frenchman on for the second half against Liverpool and the Dutch tactician seems to have liked what he saw from the player.
“With him [Martial], he wasn’t available for 90 minutes after his injury, but he gives on the ball a way out for the team,”
“He can be a target, he knows the right positions and he has the skills to play through. We saw that with the second goal. It was the right moment to bring him on the pitch.”
A few months ago, it seemed like Martial’s career in a Red Devil’s shirt had come to an end. However, a change in fortunes has seen the Frenchman emerge as an important player for Erik ten Hag and it remains to be seen how he fares.
The fact that he came on ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo could mean something but it remains to be seen who Erik ten hag trusts with a starting role. Martial would want to prove doubters wrong and win over the Old Trafford faithful.
