Manchester United end Antony transfer pursuit due to £84 million price tag
According to The Athletic (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United have decided against signing Antony from Ajax Amsterdam this transfer window due to his massive £84 million asking price.
Erik ten Hag’s arrival to the Old Trafford dugout has prompted suggestions of a reunion with his former Ajax ace. But the Red Devils are unwilling to pay over the odds for the 22-year-old.
The costly proposition has led to our hopes dashed in signing the Brazilian star. Man United are still in the market for attacking reinforcements though. It’ll be interesting to see who we go after.
The Manchester-based club have made three major signings this summer. Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez have come into the side for Ten Hag to choose from.
The defensive reinforcements were necessary after the performances in the backline in the previous campaign. But the attack needs as much attention.
Apart from Cristiano Ronaldo, none of the attackers in the squad lived up to expectations. The Portuguese was our top goalscorer last season, leading from the front. To add to our concerns, the 37-year-old is now angling for a move away from Manchester.
Bruno Fernandes had the second most goals for Man United last season, but his impact on the field dwindled as the season wore on. The midfielder looked frustrated out on the pitch on most occasions and never quite managed to make a difference when it mattered.
The supporting cast of Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford had negligible impact. The United academy star had one of his worst seasons in a red shirt. However, Anthony Elanga provided some hope to the fans.
