Raphael Varane has defended Manchester United captain Harry Maguire amidst the ongoing criticism regarding the England international’s quality and ability to lead the team.

Maguire joined the Red Devils from Leicester City back in 2019. He was subsequently made captain after Ashley Young left the club in the 2020 January transfer window.

Varane, who signed for United from Real Madrid last summer, has backed the 29-year-old as “an important player”. Speaking during the pre-match press conference via Metro, the French centre-back extended his support for the captain.

“I think he’s a very important player for us.”

“He’s the captain and he has a lot of great qualities. Obviously, we support him and he’s part of the team and very important for us.”

Maguire was signed for big money and expectations have been high ever since his performances for England during the 2018 World Cup. The defender was one of the best in the Premier League while at Leicester.

But it seems the price tag had an effect on him. The 29-year-old has failed to replicate the form he showed for the Foxes. And the England international has only gotten worse over the years.

While the 2020/21 season was not a bad one by any means, fans still felt like there was a lot to be desired from our captain’s performances.

And after a good run with England during Euro 2020, it felt like the right time for Maguire to take the next step in his United career in the 2021/22 campaign. But things have quickly gone downhill.

Maguire’s performances haven’t been up to the mark and he’s made some high-profile errors on the pitch. He’s now the butt of jokes with social media compilations of his defending.

Fans will hope the recent addition and competition in the squad brings the best out of our captain. The 29-year-old is still a decent centre-back when he plays for the national side. And we need him to be the same for us.
