Fabrizio Romano: Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong did not approve of Manchester United transfer

According to the transfer journalist, Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has not provided any indications that he has agreed to move to Manchester United on a potential transfer. Earlier, there were talks that the midfielder has finally decided to team up with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Man United are keen to get their hands on de Jong to reunite him with ten Hag ahead of the next season. They have been in negotiations with Barca since the start of this month to facilitate a transfer for the defensive midfielder. The English club also made an opening bid, which was rejected by the Spanish side.

The initial offer amounted to a guaranteed €60million alongside €10million in bonuses if certain targets were met in the future. Both clubs have maintained contact despite the rebuttal, although there were claims that the Red Devils will keep pushing after de Jong has decided to join them.

Romano now reveals that the Dutchman has not conveyed his desire to anyone and is waiting to see how this situation will play out in the coming days.

Harsh truth for Man Utd?

At one point, it seemed like the Mancunians finally made a significant breakthrough in their pursuit, but that seems not to be the case right now. They have not reached an agreement with the Catalans, nor have they changed the 25-year-old’s mind, according to this latest update.

In fact, things look even worse at this point, considering how the Blaugrana side have set a price tag of €100million for the La Liga ace’s signature. While they are open to splitting the total expense in guaranteed sum and add-ons, the amount still constitutes quite a large fee indeed.

The current asking price is considerably larger than the proposal we have made, which indicates that both clubs are far apart at this moment. That is concerning, to say the least, as this saga has been going on for quite a long time now.

Some fans have even suggested that it would be best for the Manchester club to look elsewhere to meet their needs in midfield. After all, there has not been any significant progress so far, which does raise serious concerns about whether this pursuit will be successful or not this summer.

Xavi Hernandez’s side are desperate for financial boosts, which could play into our hands as they need to raise a massive €500million to help with their books of accounts. However, ten Hag’s side must remain wary of the fact that Barca are set to hold an assembly to help with their issues on June 16.

Last month, Sport revealed that the La Liga giants are looking to raise €740million in cash by a sale of a portion of their assets. If approved by their members, that could seriously dent our hopes of signing de Jong, so it remains to be seen how this situation pans out in the coming days.
