Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United to make direct contact with Barcelona next week for Frenkie de Jong

According to the reliable journalist, Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United are in line to make direct contact with Barcelona next week to facilitate a move for Frenkie de Jong. He has been the subject of talks for quite some time now, but no progress has been made so far regarding a potential transfer.

Barca have already rejected a verbal opening bid of €60million plus add-ons from Man United for de Jong. Discussions have continued between both clubs, with the English side further engaging in internal meetings to respond with an improved offer in the future.

The Red Devils are considering making another proposal, and Romano has stated that a new bid could be made in the next few days. That is a “serious possibility“, especially considering how those at Camp Nou expect the same with new direct talks set to be held between both clubs next week.

Can Man Utd make any progress?

The supporters are quite frustrated by the business in the transfer market that has been done by the Manchester side when compared to their direct rivals. There is a desperate need to undergo a squad overhaul at Carrington, but no progress has been made on that front so far.

De Jong was the keystone for Erik ten Hag during their time together at Ajax, so it is quite understandable why we are chasing the midfielder right now. Even if much time has not passed after the summer transfer window had opened, the lack of progress is quite concerning, to say the least.

After all, the midfield is not the only area that we must focus on at this point, which is what makes the current situation quite perplexing. We already know how the Catalans have set up a price tag of €85million for de Jong, so it will be interesting to see what our second bid will be in the coming days.

Due to the change in the Blaugrana side’s financial situation, we can no longer hold them ransom, which could force our hands to meet their asking price. Then again, we have to wait and see how our pursuit develops in the coming week as it has been touted to be “really important”.

Let’s hope that there will be a conclusion to our pursuit to sign the Dutchman as we have other areas to focus upon as well ahead of the next season. The 25-year-old would certainly be a massive signing for us, but his addition should not come at the cost of our transfer plans for the entire squad this summer.
