Fabrizio Romano: Erik ten Hag held a meeting with the Manchester United board to discuss Frenkie de Jong transfer
Writing in his exclusive CaughtOffside column, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Erik ten Hag, who has been announced as the next Manchester United manager, talked with the Red Devils board regarding summer transfers last week, including a move for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong.
After the half-season spell of interim manager Ralf Rangnick finishes, Erik ten Hag will take charge of this Manchester United team. The Dutch manager is expected to join the Red Devils group after finishing his job with the Ajax team.
The Red Devils board has shown promptness in getting his thoughts on the transfer approach. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that the committee met with the Dutchman in Amsterdam to discuss some vital topics, including the future of some current stars and transfer targets.
Romano says the Red Devils board have asked the manager to take a decision on Eric Bailly, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Marcus Rashford. At the same time, they also talked about the possibility of signing Barcelona midfielder, Frenkie de Jong.
The Ajax manager is expected to meet the board again this week in England to initiate internal discussions. Despite his arrival, Ralf Rangnick will oversee the season’s final game as head manager of the team against Crystal Palace.
A good approach for the board?
Erik ten Hag is set to become the new manager of the team. Naturally, his decisions would be the final say on the ground, including how the team plays and who plays. Amid such a situation, it would be foolish to think that the manager would like everyone that the bard buys in the summer transfer window.
At the end of the day, he would be one of the most influential decision-makers, if not the most important. Hence finding his intentions first could save the team from spending millions on wrong transfers.

At the same time, the manager might have some preferred transfer targets like Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong with whom he likes to partner. The board should prioritise such requests because their partnership has worked extensively at Ajax, and they could do the same at United.
Considering United lacks depth in several positions, they have to sign a lot of players. Keeping the manager in the transfer meetings ensures that everyone remains on the same page and works towards rebuilding the team.
