Man United manager, Erik ten Hag says he has only had a ‘full squad’ for one game
Erik ten Hag’s time at the helm of Manchester United has been full of ups and downs, especially this season when the team has already been knocked out of all their competitions except the FA Cup. The Red Devils might not even qualify for the UCL next season.
The Dutchman has largely underachieved and has been called out for it on multiple occasions. Things have only gotten worse for the under pressure manager in recent days. Thankfully, he led United past Coventry to reach the FA Cup Finals.
Erik ten Hag opened up about his struggles before the semifinals showdown against Coventry. The Dutchman dismissed his critics by saying his team has been dealing with a ton of injuries for quite some time now. Let’s have a look (h/t ESPN)
“One time, against City at home last season — that is the only time I had a full squad where I can pick my team. In all the other games always there was an injury aspect we have to deal with.”
“That is my truth, others can have a different truth but I can’t put energy in that.”
Well, Ten Hag has certainly been struggling due to his team’s injuries. He claimed that it has now been 18 months since the last time he had a ‘full squad’ to choose from. The injuries do play a part but they don’t tell the whole picture.
Even without the injuries Erik ten Hag’s team doesn’t look like it has any kind of identity. Man United have played some very generic football this season. Moreover, it never looks like the team has a plan when they’re on the pitch.
His team may not be healthy but that doesn’t mean he can’t give his players the right mentality to play with. Ten Hag’s men falter during the biggest moments and have no urgency when the ball isn’t at their feet. These aren’t things that can be excused due to injuries.
