Newcastle United eye Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson next season to provide competition in the squad

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson is one of the names identified by Newcastle United as they look to increase competition within the goalkeeping area in their squad ahead of the new season.

Henderson is one of the brightest prospects to come out of Carrington in recent years, stepping up to the demands of the Premier League with ease. He spent a considerable time out on loan to develop his skills, making a name for himself while at Sheffield United when they played in the top-flight.

The Magpies currently have Martin Dubravka as their No.1 between the sticks, who has done a brilliant job for them over the past couple of years. With new owners taking over the club earlier this term, their new project at Tyneside is ambitious, and they want the best players to form part of their squad next season.

Apart from Henderson, Eddie Howe’s side is also looking at Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, Arsenal’s Bernd Leno, and West Bromwich Albion star Sam Johnstone to provide Dubravka competition next term.

Failed January move for Henderson

This is not the first time that Newcastle have tried to sign the Englishman, with a January loan move for the keeper breaking down. The transfer deal involved Dubravka going in the opposite direction to join the Red Devils, but given his current form and status, the Slovakian did not want to settle for a substitute role at the Theatre of Dreams.

It is understood that Henderson is interested in making a move away from Manchester after dropping down the pecking order at United, playing understudy to David De Gea for the entire season. The Spaniard is in hot form at the moment and does not look like he will be replaced anytime soon.

Henderson should consider himself unlucky at his boyhood club, having to settle for a deputy role despite his obvious talent. As an England international, he has proven himself on the national stage as well but has been unfortunate to be playing for United at the same time as de Gea.

Last season saw Henderson replace the Spain international for a brief period after de Gea went through a poor run of form, but he has returned this season to take back the top spot away from Henderson once again.

The 25-year-old may not be satisfied playing second fiddle to de Gea for yet another season and a move to St. James’ Park may be ideal for forwarding his career. But then again, it would certainly impact our team’s depth if we fail to replace him. Newcastle’s new owners have an exciting project in store for the future, and it remains to see if the goalie would be enticed by it.

Although a potential move for the player could hinge on the asking price set by the Red Devils, Newcastle have the money to splash for a high-ranking target. However, it is said that they too are being realistic over who they can pursue and who will come.
