Former English professional footballer Kevin Campbell urges Arsenal to sign Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek

In conversation with The Highbury squad on YouTube (h/t Football.London), former Arsenal icon Kevin Campbell has urged the Gunners to sign Manchester United outcast Donny van de Beek

The 24-year-old has been struggling to get any regular game time since making the switch to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window of 2020 for a fee of £35 million. The Dutch international has since been in the shadows and rarely featured for the Red Devils despite being an instrumental part of the Ajax Amsterdam side that managed to reach the semi-finals of the 2019 UEFA Champions League.

He has just started four Premier League games ever since making the switch to the Manchester-Based club. The North London club have been on a bit of a rebuild themselves with current manager Mikel Arteta preferring to bring young exciting prospects at The Emirates Stadium.

Campbell shared his views on the van de Beek situation at Old Trafford. He also believes that his former club should go out and sign the young Dutchman:

“I only want what’s best for Arsenal and I believe van de Beek can play, if given the opportunity. The boy can play. He wants out. I think this young man has super ability.”

“He can play anywhere around the midfield – holding, at eight, and he can play attacking. We’ve got another one who is versatile – a plug-and-play player for us.”

There has been some uncertainty around the long-term future of the former Ajax player. Recently Fabrizio Romano highlighted how the 24-year-old midfielder could push for a move away from the club in January if he isn’t given enough quality time in the starting 11 at Old Trafford.

Man United are currently struggling to put results on the board which has brought some pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Norwegian is still to win a trophy with Man United despite having spent a considerable amount of time as a manager of the Red Devils.

Solskjaer has preferred to start with two holding midfielders in Fred and Scott McTominay and the dominance of Bruno Fernandes in the No 10 position means that Donny would need something really special to make it in this Manchester United playing squad regularly.

The Gunners on the other hand have a young side with Emile Smith Rowe playing in that position primarily. The Dutch midfielder could be a great addition to Arteta’s squad and could help add an extra layer of attacking threat and creativity. Jesse Lingard who plays in a similar position has also been linked with a move away from the club due to a lack of quality game time.

The former Ajax midfielder would undoubtedly want to further his career at the club and international level. And on a personal level, it would be tough to do so if he sits on the bench week in, week out. A move to Arsenal would not be the most disastrous thing for him in all honesty.
