Former Rangers player Charlie Adam believes that Manchester United assistant coach Michael Carrick could be suitable for the coaching role at the Scottish club
In conversation with BBC’s Sportsound podcast (h/t Express), Former Rangers player Charlie Adam believes that Manchester United assistant coach Michael Carrick could succeed Steven Gerrard at the Scottish club.
Steven Gerrard made his way to the Premier League once again as the manager of Aston Villa. This could be a big step in the managerial career of the former Liverpool player after he managed to win the Scottish Premiership with The Gers.
The 40-year-old has been on the coaching staff at Old Trafford since 2018 and has been working alongside Kieran McKenna and Mike Phelan. While things may not be going entirely as planned to the coach and his staff at Man United, a new challenge with The Light Blues could be interesting.
Adam spoke about the current situation at Rangers while including Michael Carrick in the fray for the next managerial position for the defending Scottish Premiership champions:
“I’ll throw a name in the hat: Michael Carrick. He has been at Manchester United, a big club, good coach. It was a gamble with Steven. Will they go down that same route? Will they go for an experienced name? There will only be three or four people that know.”
Former England team-mates Frank Lampard and John Terry linked with this role after Gerrard left the position vacant recently. Despite these top names, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been touted as the favourite to replace the Liverpool legend.
Carrick may not be a top priority for the Scottish club right now but the 35-year-old former Rangers midfielder seems to have faith that he could do a good job there. Man United have had their own struggles in recent weeks with inconsistent performances and a lack of attacking endeavour against the top teams.
