Manchester United legend Roy Keane criticises Harry Maguire for his goal celebration in the game against Albania
Speaking during half-time of ITV Football’s coverage (h/t Metro), Roy Keane fired shots at Manchester United captain Harry Maguire for his goal celebration as England beat Albania by 5-0 in the 2022 Qatar World Cup Qualifiers.
The 28-year-old broke the deadlock by scoring a thumping header from a beautifully taken free-kick from Reece James. Following the goal, he took a jab at his critics through his celebration, which was not appreciated by Keane at the break.
Coming into this match, Maguire was under a lot of pressure as he was the “face” of the poor form that the Red Devils was going through. The goal allowed him to strike back, and he took that chance to show his discontent.
“He’s put his hands to his ears like he’s shutting the critics up, but I think that’s embarrassing.”
The former midfielder showed no mercy to the United skipper and said that his actions were embarrassing. He added that the criticisms were valid as the centre-back was horrendous for his club in the past few months.
“He’s been a disgrace the last few months for Man United. He thinks because he’s scored there he’s going to shut his critics up?.”

Quite a meal has been made from this situation, and it feels like the England defender was just venting some of his frustrations. Arguments can be formed for both sides, but it seems like he is always on the worse side of things. While he has not covered himself in glory with his actions, we should also understand where it is coming from.
He deserved criticism for his performances, but sometimes it felt like he was being made to be the scapegoat. And that could have played a big part in why Maguire decided to show his displeasure.
