Manchester United legend Roy Keane hits out at Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero for Harry Maguire incident

Speaking on Sky Sports after his former club’s 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, Manchester United legend Roy Keane hit out at Spurs defender Cristian Romero for his celebration in Harry Maguire‘s face after the United captain scored an own goal.

United managed to complete the double over Spurs this season thanks to a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick, with the Portuguese superstar netting in both halves of the game to ensure his side picked up all three points at home.

For the Lilywhites, talisman Harry Kane scored from the penalty spot to keep the tie at 1-1, and then an unfortunate Maguire own goal had the game at 2-2 before Ronaldo popped up a few minutes later to head home the winner.

The result puts United in fifth place, putting some more distance over Tottenham in eighth place, as both teams chase a top four finish by the end of the season to ensure Champions League football is played next term.

“Not good”

Maguire netted an own goal in the second half after Sergio Reguilon fizzed a ball across the United back line and the skipper stuck a leg out to deflect the ball into his own net. Romero, who was right behind the Englishman, proceeded to celebrate in his face as he wheeled away in delight.

Keane, who was United’s skipper himself for a long time, responded to Romero’s reaction after the goal, saying that it was not good at all and that as a player, stars like Maguire would take note of such incidents and remember it during and after the game.

“Not good, no, no, no. You remember. When you’re a player you take note of that, don’t worry. You take note of that.”

Romero’s reaction turned out to be a poor one, as Maguire had the last laugh as United won a crucial game to dent Tottenham’s top-four hopes. One of Spurs’ better defenders this season, Romero was left to rue his conduct in the end.

Maguire, meanwhile, has been under criticism this campaign for his poor performances. His own goal will not have done him any favours, but a win at home will mask the fact that he made a blunder – unfortunate as it was.

Ronaldo made the major headlines for his hat-trick on Saturday, and to add to Tottenham’s pain, this incident was pointed out and shamed by Keane, which will surely leave a bitter taste in Spurs’ mouths. Hopefully, Romero learns from his lesson in the future.

For Maguire, he will hope to correct any mistakes and avoid any more own goal situations tomorrow night as we take on Atletico Madrid in the return leg of the Round of 16 tie in the Champions League. We will need our skipper at his best tomorrow, and ensure we progress to the quarterfinals.
