Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Manchester United should have had a penalty against West Ham United

Speaking in the post-match interview with Sky Sports, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes that Manchester United should have had a penalty against West Ham during their 0-1 loss in the EFL Cup.

The Red Devils were knocked out of the competition in the third round of the competition itself due to a resolute West Ham defence. The Hammers took the lead after just nine minutes through Manuel Lanzini.

However, post that, it was incredibly hard for the Old Trafford outfit to penetrate David Moyes’ defence and the Londoners made their way to the fourth round of the competition. While that was the case, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes his side should have had a penalty in the game.

Jesse Lingard, who earned his first start of the season, was appeared to be pulled down by his shirt by Mark Noble in the six-yard box. However, it was not deemed to be a penalty, and the game went on. Solskjaer provided his verdict on the incident later, saying (h/t Sky Sports):

“It’s a penalty on Jesse. You can’t pull his shorts when you are on the way down. Mark [Noble] was unlucky on Sunday and lucky with that one today.”

However, Mark Noble himself had a different opinion on the matter. Noble told Sky Sports:

“That’s football, he (Lingard) dived and I told him off for screaming, funnily enough he didn’t really do it at our place, but he does it here.”

Regardless, the Manchester-based outfit had a little bit of an off-day, but one good thing that did come out of the game was that several fringe stars got some much-needed game-time.

With fixtures coming thick and fast from now on, Solskjaer will need a fully fit squad as he looks to challenge for silverware this season.
