Manchester United star Marcus Rashford to be included in GCSE curriculum for media studies
According to The Guardian, Manchester United star Marcus Rashford will be included in the media studies curriculum for GCSE students.
The English international made waves last year following his efforts to combat child food poverty in the UK. It brought him to the forefront of the fight for social justice. Rashford is today a hero on and off the field for a large number of people.
Rashford made full use of social media to help sway support for his philanthropic efforts. It reached such a crescendo that even the UK government were forced to go back on their original take on school meals.
According to the report, this will now be studied by students who undertake AQA media studies at the GCSE level from next September.
They will be able to learn about Rashford’s online presence and how through his communications on social media platforms, he was able to successfully engage with his followers. The students will also be taught about the social and racial issues he cares about.
The move is part of the effort by exam boards to diversify their qualifications to make them relevant to modern life and society. In Rashford, they have a true hero of social justice who used the media to fight the injustice around him.
Sandra Allan, the head of AQA’s creative arts curriculum believes the footballer’s inclusion in the course will not only inspire students but also act as a source of motivation for them. It is after all imperative that we learn about those who make a difference in today’s world.
“Marcus Rashford is one of the most influential and inspirational young people in the UK, so students can learn a huge amount from how he uses social media to make a real impact.”
