Harry Maguire defends Manchester United ace Jesse Lingard after costly blunder
According to an interview done with MUTV (h/t Manchester Evening News), Harry Maguire has explained that nobody is blaming Manchester United star Jesse Lingard after his horrid mistake in the club’s 2-1 defeat against Young Boys.
It all looked good for the Red Devils at the start of the game when Cristiano Ronaldo poked home his first Champions League goal for the club in his second stint at the Old Trafford outfit. Although most of the credit did go to Bruno Fernandes for his sumptuous assist, the Manchester-based club were up 1-0, but it was all about to change.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka received a red card after the half-hour mark, and United were down to 10 men. Young Boys eventually equalized after a little over an hour into the game, but it was about to get even worse for the English club.
Jesse Lingard’s back pass in the last minute of added time led to Young Boys scoring the 2nd goal of the game and completing a come-back against the Premier League giants. However, captain Harry Maguire has come to the aid of his teammate and has reiterated that nobody is blaming the 28-year-old for his mistakes.
Maguire told MUTV (h/t Manchester Evening News):
“It’s disappointing, but that’s football, people make mistakes. We’re not blaming Jesse, he’s tried to do the right thing but he’s left the pass short. Everyone makes mistakes, I’m sure every footballer who has played on that pitch today has made a mistake for a goal. Jesse will pick himself up and be ready to go again on Sunday”.
