Speaking to HLN via Sky Sports (h/t Manchester Evening News), Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku namechecked Manchester United and credited Inter Milan for getting him out of a ‘deep hole’.

The Belgian striker joined the Red Devils in a £75million move back in 2017. Despite signing a five-year contract, he departed Old Trafford just two years later.

His time at Inter was a success. In just his second season, he led the club to their first Scudetto in 11 years as they ended Juventus’ reign at the top. Now, the striker has returned to Chelsea- the club that first brought him to England all those years back.

Lukaku stated that he was only going to leave I Nerazzurri for the Blues and that when he knew that the interest from Thomas Tuchel’s side was serious, he went to Simone Inzaghi’s office.

“I was in a deep hole at Man United. I didn’t want to go behind Inter’s back. So after training, I went to [Inter boss Simone] Inzaghi’s office. I didn’t want to ruin the atmosphere because I was no longer with my head in Milan. So I asked him: please find an agreement”

Lukaku’s time at Manchester United wasn’t all that bad. He scored 42 goals and made 13 assists in 96 games for the Red Devils, but it was visible that he may not be the perfect fit for their system.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has little to regret now that they have Cristiano Ronaldo, the 36-year-old striker that outscored Lukaku in Serie A last season.

Mason Greenwood is also in the pipeline that leads to greatness and Edinson Cavani has a few years left in him. Man United fans, however, are probably not going to wish well on Lukaku this season considering he now plays for a direct title rival.
