Chris Sutton: Danny Ings could be on his way to either Manchester United or Manchester City

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live (h/t Manchester Evening News), Chris Sutton admits that Southampton ace Danny Ings could be on his way to either Manchester United or Manchester City this summer.

The 28-year-old has rebuilt his reputation as a dependable striker at Southampton and has developed his game under Ralph Hasenhuttl. He ended the season as the club’s top scorer with 13 goals in 33 matches. (h/t BBC)

With just a year left on his contract, Southampton have a decision to make regarding Ings’ future. With both City and United interested, he has no shortage of suitors.

“He could end up at Manchester City or Manchester United.”

Both Manchester clubs are in the market for a striker and have been linked with the likes of Harry Kane and Erling Haaland. However, neither player will come cheap, unlike Ings who is a budget option.

A former Liverpool striker, Ings’ time at Anfield was marred by injuries. Since moving to Southampton, he has produced an impressive tally of 46 goals and 10 assists in 100 games. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Ings still has his share of injuries but is more often available than not. Unfortunately, he did not make Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man squad for the Euros.

Cavani signed a new deal until 2022

While he is not the most glamorous name out there, Ings is a steady player who has much to offer. He already has experience of playing at the top and was crowned Southampton’s Fans Player of the Year for 2019/20.

A proven Premier League striker, Ings will also not cost much, thanks to his contract expiring next year. Securing him would shore up our attacking options while also saving us money that can be invested elsewhere.

Despite extending Edinson Cavani’s contract, United have just two senior strikers in the squad including Anthony Martial. It is fair to say that the lack of cover is a major issue going into next season.
