Transfer News: Danny Ings backed to leave Southampton as Manchester United links continue
Speaking on Football FanCast (h/t The Express), former Southampton player Carlton Palmer has backed Danny Ings to leave the club in the summer transfer window amid interest from Manchester United.
A report by The Telegraph (h/t The Express) has linked Ings with United in the summer. It mentions that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to bolster his attack ahead of the next season.
Ings was in terrific form in the 2019/20 season where he scored 22 times. He missed out on the Premier League Golden Boot by just a solitary goal. However, his appearances and goal went down this season.
Ings made 9 fewer appearances and scored 12 times. And according to Palmer, there is a reason why the 28-year-old is yet to renew his deal at St. Mary’s.
Like a new sign-ings!
“Why would you want to go somewhere and not be a first-team regular? He’s at that stage of his career now [where he should be wanting to play]. For sure, he’s going to move because there’s a reason why he’s not signed his contract – something’s sorted. The only reason why you go to those places now is because it’s a bumper payday.
The former Liverpool striker would surely create a number of headlines if he was to join their rivals in Manchester. However, it is a move that would make sense despite Edinson Cavani renewing his deal by another deal.
Ings would offer great competition to Anthony Martial in particular. The Frenchman was in poor form over the course of the season and netted just 4 times in the league.

But United would have to wary of competition as Ings has caught eyes of other clubs as well. According to TalkSPORT (h/t The Express), Tottenham Hotspur are also looking at the ex-Burnley hitman with Harry Kane’s future up in the air.
