AS Roma to pass up on signing Manchester United star Nemanja Matic
According to Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb, AS Roma have chosen not to make a move for Manchester United star Nemanja Matic in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Set to be managed by former United boss Jose Mourinho, the Serie A giants are looking to rebuild after a disappointing season. The Portuguese tactician is well aware of Matic’s abilities having also managed him earlier at Chelsea.
The Serbian was signed from Chelsea in 2017 and has so far gone on to make 157 appearances for United. During this time, he has scored four goals and made seven assists. (h/t Transfermarkt)
At 32, Matic is no more a regular starter for United. He has made just 36 appearances this season of which just 22 have come from the start. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Matic for his part is open to moving to Roma. The Italian giants could have signed him for around €10m in the off-season.
They are however in no position to afford his wages and have been forced to take a step back. The midfielder currently earns €7m net per season at Old Trafford.
An experienced hand, Matic brings much to the United squad. However, he is not getting any younger and the Red Devils will be wise to sell him if a good offer comes in.
United face a key summer window where they will need to address their deficiencies. It was recently reported that the club is keen to bring in a new defensive midfielder.
With money at a premium, maybe selling Matic will help free up funds that can be invested in bringing in a new long term project.

Unfortunately, an exit this summer will mean that Matic will leave United without having won a major trophy. The Red Devils came close to changing that but fell short to Villarreal in the Europa League final yesterday night.
