Transfer News: Solskjaer seeking to sign a defensive midfielder to unleash Paul Pogba at Manchester United

According to Sky Sports journalist James Cooper via United Journal (h/t Football Fancast), Manchester United will look to sign a defensive midfielder in the summer transfer window.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has predominantly favoured the double pivot of Fred and Scott McTominay when possible. While the duo has done a decent job, it is debatable if we can compete at the top with them in the team.

While the two of them get stuck in and offer protection to the back four, their contribution to the attack has been minimal. It would appear Solskjaer is keen to change that.

The Norwegian is seeking to bring in a player who can help him spare the likes of Paul Pogba for offensive responsibilities. The Frenchman is an overbearing force when in form and has often showcased what he can do in a France jersey.

More of the same would be welcome at Old Trafford and hopefully, Solskjaer’s new plans will see to just that. While United have numbers in midfield, choosing to improve upon the quality will be a key move.

It is perhaps interesting that the journalist has chosen to mention Pogba by name. The Frenchman’s contract at United expires in 2022 and he is yet to commit his future to the club.

United have a major decision to make regarding the 28-year-old this season. Whether he will stay put and go on to replicate this seasons’ success remains to be seen.

With Nemanja Matic not getting any younger, United will need to bring in a replacement sooner or later. The likes of Declan Rice have been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months. Who we ultimately bring in remains to be seen.
