Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United star Nemanja Matic likely to undergo medical with AS Roma in July

According to the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Manchester United star Nemanja Matic is likely to undergo medical tests with AS Roma in July to complete his transfer move. He would be teaming up with his former manager Jose Mourinho back in Rome in the upcoming season.

It has already been confirmed by Man United that Matic will be leaving them on a free transfer when his current contract expires at the end of this month. He is in line to join Roma ahead of the next campaign, having reached a full agreement with the Italian club regarding his permanent move.

The Serb will shortly sign the one-year deal that he has agreed upon, which also includes an option to extend his stay by another year. The Serie A side are already laying down the foundations for the medical tests, which will probably take place next month.

Can Man Utd successfully replace Matic?

Matic’s importance to the team cannot be overlooked despite him playing a diminished role in recent years. That is especially highlighted looking at our balanced performances, which came mostly when the 33-year-old was on the pitch donning our shirt.

As such, the former Chelsea man’s exit would undoubtedly affect us to a great extent due to the lack of natural options in the squad to replace him. The board’s decision not to sign a defensive midfielder last summer was followed by a lot of criticisms from the fans as there was a clear need to address the glaring issue.

The management opted against doing so, and their decision had an adverse impact on our displays as the system employed on the pitch was often imbalanced during games. Now, that problem would be further heightened by the lack of a direct replacement for Matic in our ranks.

Fortunately, it appears that those in charge at the top have finally realised their mistake and are looking to support Erik ten Hag this summer. After all, we have been linked with several holding midfielders who can fill in the double pivot formation that we usually employ at the base of the midfield.

Ajax’s Edson Alvarez, Ruben Neves of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona, Chelsea superstar N’Golo Kante and Sporting ace Matheus Nunes are some of the players who have been touted as potential signings that could arrive this summer.

The supporters remain hopeful that they are turning a page for the better under ten Hag and that there will be some drastic changes to help this club get back to the place it once was in the past.
