Transfer News: Manchester United star Nemanja Matic will join AS Roma this summer
According to Sky Sport Italia (h/t Fabrizio Romano on Twitter), Manchester United star Nemanja Matic will be joining AS Roma in the upcoming summer transfer window. He has already been confirmed to leave Old Trafford ahead of the next season.
Matic is set to leave Man United as a free agent when his contract expires at the end of this month. An agreement will be reached shortly with Roma, with the midfielder being in line to reunite with his former manager Jose Mourinho. The latter personally demanded this transfer leading to this situation.
Mourinho’s decision was influenced by his previous affiliation with Matic during their spells together at Chelsea and the Red Devils. The Serb midfielder will now sign a one-year contract with the Italian side while having the option to extend the deal by another year.

Man Utd must find a replacement!
Even though Matic has been in the twilight of his playing career for quite some time, his importance to our team cannot be overlooked at all. After all, the 33-year-old is our only natural defensive midfield option in the squad, and we have looked stable in the centre of the pitch when he has featured for us the last term.
However, the Premier League ace’s exit has come at a perfect time as we are looking for a fresh rebuild under Erik ten Hag this summer. As such, Matic leaving for Italy would be in our best interests as we can look past and prepare for life after him moving forward.
Furthermore, Matic would not be joining any PL side, which means we would not be dealing with him much more frequently. The fans would be delighted to see him succeed elsewhere even though things did not turn out in the best possible way for the team since his arrival back in 2017.
The Manchester board received backlash from fans when they failed to bring in a holding midfielder last summer. Now, they cannot ignore the need to address that issue any longer since we will be losing our only natural option in the squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Even if Matic stayed, there was perhaps a need to bring in a player who can start regularly in central midfield. The Serbian was, after all, not a first-team regular. But his departure, along with Paul Pogba’s exit, now underlines the need for a new face in midfield.
