Former Premier League player wants Mason Greenwood to make England squad for Euros 2020
Speaking to Premier League productions (h/t Metro), Glenn Hoddle stated that Mason Greenwood has ‘got to be in the England squad’ at UEFA Euros 2020 as he suggested a ‘specialised role’ for the Manchester United star.
Greenwood, 19, was at his scintillating best as he came off the bench to hand United a win against Spurs. The Red Devils went into half-time trailing 1-0 but Fred pulled a goal back in the 57th minute.
And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to bring on Greenwood around the 72nd minute for Marcus Rashford. The youngster then played a delicious cross to find Cavani, whose diving header put United ahead with 11 minutes to go.
Deep into stoppage, Greenwood himself sealed the 3 points to tighten United’s grip on 2nd position. And Hoddle stated that the forward warrants his inclusion in the Three Lions squad because of this showing.
“For me, he’s got to be in the England squad this boy because he does what he’s done today. When you put a sub on, if you need a goal for England in the Euros, he creates chances for himself; for others and he’s a finisher.”
The former England boss admits that the 19-year-old is not a starter just yet because of the attacking options available to Gareth Southgate. But he does state that Greenwood could thrive in a ‘specialised’ role.
“I think he might not start. But if you want to change the game, ‘make a difference son, go on and win the game for us’, he’s your man… I think there’s a specialised position for him coming on from the bench.”
The 2020 UEFA European Championship takes place from 11th June to 11th July 2021 after it was postponed by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
