Donny van de Beek can add value to Manchester United claims Rio Ferdinand

Speaking on Vibe with FIVE (h/t Metro), former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has opined that struggling midfielder Donny van de Beek can add value to the team.

The 23-year-old midfielder arrived at Old Trafford last summer from AFC Ajax in a deal worth £40m. However, things have failed to work out as planned for the Dutchman who has struggled to work his way into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans.

So far this term, Van de Beek has started just two Premier League games. Having served a spell out on the sidelines, he returned to the lineup against Leicester City at the weekend in the FA Cup.

However, he cut a frustrated figure for the most part before making way for Bruno Fernandes in the second half. Given his situation, murmurs of a summer exit are doing the rounds already.

Amidst this, Ferdinand has questioned why Manchester United sign Van de Beek if they were going to use him so sparingly.

“I feel like Van de Beek… I reckon he’s sitting there thinking, This ain’t what I was sold, man. No one is guaranteed to play anywhere but I think it must have been sold to him that he was coming to play.”

Ferdinand then went on to add that it was not fair on the player to question his lack of impact when he hasn’t been given enough opportunities. He then insisted that the Dutchman would be a valuable contributor to the team if backed.

Van de Beek has predominantly come off the bench

“I think he would add value to this team, definitely. He’s someone who would create goals, he played a part in the goal [vs Leicester]. When he gets in the box, he knows how to put the ball in the back of the net.”

Van de Beek, without a question, is a much better player than he has shown at Manchester United. It is only the question of him being a run of games to build his confidence. Hopefully, Solskjaer goes on and does that as the Dutchman can be a top-quality player for us.
