Manchester United given a financial boost as Romelu Lukaku continues to impress at Inter Milan
According to Italian newspaper, Gazzetta Dello Sport via Sempre Inter, Manchester United are set for a €1m windfall thanks to the form of former ace Romelu Lukaku.
The Belgian striker left United for Inter Milan in 2019 and has since led the Nerazzurri line with panache. He has so far scored 56 goals and made 10 assists in just 80 appearances for the Italian giants. (h/t Transfermarkt)
With 16 strikes so far, he is on level with Cristiano Ronaldo in the Serie A top scorers’ list for the season. Interestingly, there are three former United stars in the top five with Zlatan Ibrahimovic coming in fourth. (h/t BBC)
Inter paid a club-record fee of €65m plus €10m in bonuses to land the Belgian international. Although he had a decent record at United, the cons outweighed the pros and he was eventually shipped out.
The report did not specify what particular bonus the Belgian had triggered. It is assumed that he had reached a certain landmark number of goals in an Inter shirt.
Antonio Conte’s side are currently top of Serie A and could end Juventus’ stranglehold on the Scudetto title this season. Lukaku’s goals will play a major role in where the title could and up. Whether this will further benefit United monetarily remains to be seen.
Lukaku is a competent striker who can thrive in the right system. While it may not have worked out for him at United, he has gone on to make a name for himself in Italy.
