Gary Neville: Manchester United star Victor Lindelof will thrive at Liverpool
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football (h/t Manchester Evening News), Gary Neville has claimed that he believes Manchester United star Victor Lindelof would have thrived had he played for Liverpool.
The Swedish international has come under fire for his erratic performances in recent weeks. He put in questionable shifts against both Everton and West Bromwich Albion as United dropped points in both games.
Neville believes Lindelof would have done much better had he been at Liverpool alongside Virgil van Dijk.
The Dutchman is one of the best defenders in the world and single-handedly transformed what was a porous Liverpool defence. Neville has high regard for the Swede who has struggled to form a formidable partnership with Harry Maguire.
“I think if you put Lindelof alongside Van Dijk at Liverpool… he’s a fantastic player, I think he’s a really good player.”
Neville also pointed out that Lindelof would have done well alongside former United teammate Rio Ferdinand. One could conclude that the 26-year-old needs a leader who he can thrive alongside.
“He understands the game, he reads the game, if he was alongside a Rio Ferdinand or a Virgil van Dijk, I think they would make a great pair.”
Not a good match!
Neville’s comments also appear to throw some shade at Maguire, who is United’s first-choice centre-back.
Playing alongside Maguire asks more out of Lindelof which in turn impacts the United defence. The Red Devils skipper is notoriously slow and often leaves the backline open when up against pacy attackers.
Maguire is not innocent in the whole matter and needs to do better both as the captain and our ace defender. Unless he takes charge of the situation, he is as much part of the problem as anyone else.

Maguire, to his credit, did step up and defend Lindelof from criticism in his post-match presser at the Hawthorns. However, little will change unless he too steps up his game and organizes his backline better.
