Manchester United urged to sign Atletico Madrid star Kieran Trippier

Speaking to MEN (h/t Daily Mail), former Manchester United full-back Fabio has urged the club to sign Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier.

Trippier has enjoyed a new lease of life since swapping Tottenham Hotspur for Spain in 2019. He has emerged as a key player for the Spaniards under Diego Simeone. Fabio reckons the defender would make an astute addition to the Red Devils squad.

He believes signing the 30-year-old will help coax out the best in current first-choice right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The 24-year-old is the undisputed choice for United in that position.

“If they bring in a good right-back, you’re going to help him to improve.”

Fabio believes United are reaping the benefits of a similar approach on the other flank. Luke Shaw, who had experienced more lows than highs at Old Trafford, looks a different beast since the signing of Alex Telles.

“Telles has made him improve, someone to say ‘if you’re not playing well, if you’re not concentrating, working hard, you’re going to lose your place.”

With no serious threat to his position, it can be argued that Wan-Bissaka need not have the same drive to keep improving himself. Fabio is certain that competition will make the United right-back step up his game.

“One hundred per cent, this is what makes players compete for their place, and to improve. If you play every game, you have no competition and you can start to get in a comfort zone, it’s not good for you.”

A glaring shortcoming!

While Wan-Bissaka is a solid defender, he isn’t a force to be reckoned with going forward. While he did score United’s opener against Southampton, he will need to contribute more offensively.

This becomes all the more apparent considering United’s lack of effective options at right-wing. The onus to attack thus also falls on the defender who will need to step up.

Fabio’s line of thought appears to be in accordance with that of United’s. The club too believe that competition is needed to help Wan Bissaka improve. Amongst the names under consideration is that of Norwich City star Max Aarons.
