Manchester United keeping tabs on Max Aarons as the search to compete with Aaron Wan-Bissaka
According to ESPN, Manchester United are attempting to improve Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s performances by bringing in competition in the form of Max Aarons.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is United’s first-choice right-back. Although he impressed against Southampton, he can still take his performances up a notch, especially in attack.
While the 24-year-old is a solid defender, his forays upfront leave much to be desired. While he can have his moments, it is far from a sure thing in regards to an offensive contribution.
In comparison, Aarons is below Wan-Bissaka in the development cycle but offers a better balance between attack and defence. Moreover, the prospect of competition could help bring out the best in the latter.
United do not have to look far to realise that this is a viable approach. Bringing in Alex Telles last summer has seen Luke Shaw step up to the challenge. The Englishman is amongst our best players and had a stormer of a night against Southampton.
Playing against his former side, Shaw created five chances, of which two lead to goals. This despite him playing just 45 minutes. (h/t ESPN)
A seasoned alternative?
Aarons is not the only right-back on United’s radar. Atletico Madrid star Kieran Trippier has also been touted with a switch to Old Trafford. At 30, the Englishman is a veteran who has experience of the game at the highest levels. (h/t Forbes)
Moreover, he is a deft hand at set-pieces, giving the United attack a further boost. Wan-Bissaka is at the age where he needs to step up his game a notch. The right competitor can push him to do just that.
