Harry Maguire occasionally turns to Manchester United legend Bryan Robson for advice
Harry Maguire will celebrate a year of being Manchester United skipper by leading the side against Liverpool at Anfield later tonight.
Signed from Leicester City in 2019, the English international became the most expensive defender in football history. While the jury is still out on his standing in the game, he has no doubt improved the Red Devils backline.
The 27-year-old has brought in leadership and is a noticeable presence at the back. Despite being involved in a few of issues on and off the pitch, Maguire is finally coming into his own as a defensive star.
According to MEN, he admits being named United skipper is a massive honour and that he has learned a lot during his stint so far.
“I have spoken a lot to Bryan Robson because Robbo’s always knocking about the place and he’s told me loads, but I am my own man with my way of being captain.”
While he is certainly happy at being captain, his focus remains fixed on winning games and trophies.
“First and foremost it’s a massive honour, but I am here to win games of football and to win trophies.”
Maguire has also spoken to former United skipper Bryan Robson since joining the club. As the one who captained us to the club’s first Premier League title, Robson was at the helm making us the top side in England.
Robson reborn?
Maguire now has the opportunity to emulate Robson as a resurgent United side hope to solidify their lead at the top. While a win against Liverpool will send us six points clear, the skipper knows there is still a long way to go.
“There is still a long way to go, we’re under no illusion about that, because we want to be challenging year in, year out. There’s a lot of hard work still to be done.”
The 27-year-old is keen to leave his mark rather than emulate the legends who have worn the armband before him. However, by willing to listen to people like Robson, Maguire is showing that he is willing to learn lessons where he can.
Robson for his part has a good opinion of Maguire. He believes the 27-year-old has the qualities to earmark him as an excellent captain. (h/t The Sun)

Maguire went on to praise the leadership qualities shown by those in the United squad. While he may hold the armband, the burden of leadership does not apply to just him.
If Maguire’s words are to be believed, there are plenty who are capable of stepping up when needed. United certainly appears to be on the up.
