Bruno Fernandes calls out Manchester United players for being too agreeable

Speaking to The Players’ Tribune (h/t Mirror), Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has revealed that he thrives on criticism.

There is certainly plenty of that to go about as rivals continue to question the role penalties play in his success. The 26-year-old, however, has let the football do the talking with him winning yet another Premier League Player of the Month award.

This was Fernandes’ fourth award in 2020, making him the first-ever player to achieve such a feat.

“I like criticism. Because it helps you to improve and understand that you can’t relax. It motivates me.”

The Portuguese international is not keen to play with ‘yes men’ and has openly called out his teammates where he felt needed.

A particularly memorable incident occurred last season in our semifinal loss to Sevilla in the Europa League. Fernandes and Victor Lindelof were involved in a spat that saw both players have a go at each other.

The midfielder has, however, played down the incident and believes it is a part of the game. Given what was at stake that night, his sentiments were perfectly understandable.

“I live football like it has to be lived — in the moment. But it stays on the pitch. That’s it. And tomorrow, we’re all friends again. We hug, we get on with it.”

The right mentality!

Fernandes’ take on constructive criticism is a welcome change in a sport where tempers run high. Taking in what he is also dishing out is the hallmark of a player who is keen to improve both himself and those around him.

“I want people like my friends on the playgrounds who aren’t afraid to point the finger at me and tell me where I’m going wrong.”

Given the performances Liverpool and Manchester City have put up in recent years, Untied will need to raise their standards to ensure they stay competitive. In Fernandes, they have just the player with the right attitude to do so.

Fernandes believes what happens on the pitch should stay on the pitch. The fact we can do that is a testament to the mentality of the squad that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has built.

The match against Liverpool at Anfield today will be a test of how far we have come under the Norwegian.
