Manchester United voted the luckiest team in the Premier League
In a vote conducted by Ladbrokes (h/t Daily Star), Manchester United have been voted in as the luckiest team in the Premier League.
We beat Liverpool to the top of this rather curious table. The Red Devils were considered to be lucky by one in four voters as they took the title with some ease.
We are pretty sure that the fact we were awarded 22 penalties over the course of last season would have influenced the voters. In fact, it translates to a penalty being awarded every 2.85 games.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side looked to be floundering towards a lower top-half finish at the turn of the year. The inspired signing of Bruno Fernandes and an upturn in form saw us finish third in the final standings.
The Portuguese star enjoyed a stellar campaign where he scored 12 times for us in the course of a handful of appearances. Of these, eight were penalties as Fernandes displayed ice-cool veins to dispatch them all. (h/t Daily Star)
Around 25% voted for United while Liverpool garnered 18% in second. Surprisingly Aston Villa ended up in the sixth spot, just behind Arsenal.
The Villans were the beneficiaries of a hugely controversial call where a legitimate Sheffield United goal was ruled out.
The game eventually ended 0-0 and Villa escaped with a point. It proved decisive at the end of the campaign as they escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth.
Had they lost that day, it is debatable whether they would have finished ahead of 18th-placed Bournemouth, given how close both teams were across a number of parameters.

While luck does play a factor in every aspect of life, in sports, it can make or break a team’s fortunes. United have created their own luck in recent months and hopefully, it is a sign of things set to continue.
West Bromwich Albion were judged to be the least lucky, having garnered just 0.5% votes.
