Rival hero believes Man United should sell underperforming star this summer

Manchester United urged to sell David de Gea for Dean Henderson

According to the Daily Star, Former Arsenal star Stewart Robson believes Manchester United should sell David de Gea this summer.

He believes the Red Devils should instead keep their faith in maverick youngster Dean Henderson. Having returned from a successful two-year loan spell at Sheffield United, Henderson has seen his reputation rise up several notches.

“If I was the Manchester United manager I might be thinking of selling him.”

The 23-year-old penned a new long-term deal at United that will run until June 2025. He is set to compete with De Gea for the No.1 spot at the club next season.

Not selling helps maintain status quo

Robson believes keeping De Gea at the club will force United’s hand in playing him. He is currently the number one at the club and staying put is unlikely to change it.

“If De Gea is there, I’d play him, because I still think he’s a top-class goalkeeper.”

It does however put him under the scanner. If the 29-year-old goes on to make more mistakes, he could in all likelihood open a pandora’s box.

“He might play brilliantly – but as soon as he makes one, the press will be onto him again.”

Henderson for his part is keen to work alongside the Spaniard and learn from him. The apprentice might as well take on the mantle from the master sometime in the future.

Henderson has admitted that he is keen to play as many minutes as possible. With competition for places now strong, it remains to be seen how De Gea reacts.

The Spaniard has been a dependable player for most of his nine years at the club. Henderson’s presence might as well be the motivation he needs to get back to his best.
