Manchester United target Dayot Upamecano given transfer ultimatum
Speaking to German publication Bild (h/t Daily Star), RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has handed Manchester United target Dayot Upamecano a transfer ultimatum.
The 21-year-old is the defensive linchpin of Julian Nagelsmann’s side and has played a key role in Leipzig’s rise in both Germany and Europe.
He has played a key role in the German side’s run-up to the Champions League quarter-finals this season. Upamecano made 33 appearances and assisted one goal so far. (h/t Transfermarkt)
His performances have garnered much attention with the likes of us and Arsenal keen on his trail. His contract at Leipzig expires next summer. The Germans are not keen to lose their star on a free.
“We have a very clear understanding with him and his agent that he will not be allowed to leave for free. We can’t afford that as a club.”
This has prompted Mintzlaff to inform the player that he has to sign a new deal or leave the club this summer.
“There are two options for him – he will either sign a contract extension or leave. I’m sure that we will know relatively quickly in which direction it goes.”
Upamecano has a €60m release clause that expires at the end of this month. It is unknown how much Leipzig will demand once the date passes. (h/t Daily Star)
United improved their rearguard last summer with the addition of Harry Maguire. Although Victor Lindelof has improved in recent months, it is an area United could improve on.

Upamecano would be a brilliant addition at Old Trafford. A partnership with Maguire is an intimidating prospect on paper.
He had earlier admitted that he is happy at Leipzig and it remains to be seen if his future lies there.
