Manchester United put off Dayot Upamecano pursuit until next summer
According to Sky Sports reporter James Cooper (h/t Express), Manchester United will make a move for Dayot Upamecano next summer.
The Red Devils have been linked with a move for the RB Leipzig defender. They are however keen to bring in a more established centre-back.
At just 21, Upamecano has established himself as one of the best young defenders on the continent. It is however not enough to convince the Red Devils to launch a bid this summer.
“I’m told Dayot Upamecano isn’t on the list in terms of Manchester United’s potential acquisitions this summer.”
According to the report, Cooper believes it is likely that United will continue to monitor Upamecano’s progress at Leipzig for another season.
“I think it’s more likely Manchester United will monitor his progress and perhaps go back in for him next summer.”
Despite his age, Upamecano is a solid defender who has shown he has what it takes to compete at the top level. He was instrumental as Leipzig made it to last season’s UEFA Champions League semifinals.
His performances earned him not just a new contract but also his first call-up to the France senior squad. Making it into the World champions’ squad is no mean feat and speaks volumes of Upamecano’s ability. (h/t MEN)
United risk further competition by putting off a move until next summer. Given the economic impact of the coronavirus on football on the whole, United should move to secure Upamecano at once.

It is possible that we will face more competition for Upamecano next summer. If he impresses and becomes a mainstay in the French setup, it could also see his asking price rise.
United are in need of a capable central defender to partner Harry Maguire. By postponing what should be a key purchase, we risk losing out on a potential world-class star.
