Manchester United will be looking to close the gap on Manchester City and are looking to sign up to five players ahead of the new season.

The Times (h/t The Express) claims that Jose Mourinho is going to spend big in hopes of catching our city rivals and has five deals in mind. While we are working to sign Diogo Dalot from Porto, United are also interested in signing Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham and Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The three players named above would cost us a total of £120m, with Alderweireld and Fred being valued at around £50m each.

That is not all, as we will also be looking to add strength to our left-back spot and the midfield, given that we are expected to lose a few players.

The report continues to say that Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian would be leaving Old Trafford while the future of England left-back Luke Shaw is still not certain.

Our midfield will also be feeling a void next season as Michael Carrick has retired from the game and is now coaching in the United setup. The former Tottenham man certainly gave it his all and it will be difficult to replace him in the team.

Another player that could be leaving in the summer is Marouane Fellaini as we have not solved his contract issue. United will need to spend a lot in the summer if they are to bring in quality signings to challenge City and others for the Premier League crown and much more.

The recently concluded season certainly did not go as we had planned as we finished behind City. However, getting knocked out of the Champions League at the hands of Sevilla was probably our lowest point.

Losing the FA Cup final to Chelsea was a bitter blow too but with the right kind of signings coming in, we should be able to challenge and perform better in the upcoming season.
