Manchester United are seriously considering the possibility of meeting the release clause of midfielder Marcelo Brozovic from Inter Milan. The 24-year-old has been one of the key players for Inter Milan this season, but it has not exactly translated into a lot of success for the club. Despite the club going into new ownership and appointing Stefano Pioli, they have been unable to achieve much success in the Italian Serie A the season. Lack of top-level European football is one of the main deterrent factors when it comes to top players remaining at the San Siro. Furthermore, the club are under a lot of financial strain and may struggle to meet the UEFA fair play regulations without selling some of their best players.
Marcelo Brozovic seems the likely candidate to sell in the summer, as the midfielder has a reported £43 million release clause in his contract. Inter Milan are aware that Manchester United will have no trouble in meeting this transfer fee once they deem the player has been good enough for the squad. Jose Mourinho is, without a doubt, keen to revamp the squad after being frustrated with a mediocre campaign. Even though United managed to win the League Cup and reach the semifinals of the Europa league, the domestic campaign is one of major disappointment.
United have been unable to enter into the top four places of the league for much of the campaign. They have been stuck in the sixth and fifth places. This seems to have frustrated Mourinho, who is aware that the club are unbeaten in the league since October. There have been numerous draws along the way and they have prevented United from making significant progress up the table. Rather than just relying upon Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Mourinho wants the club to score from a number of players across the pitch.
After having joined Inter Milan only in the summer, Brozovic has impressed with his ability going forward. He has been able to score 5 goals and create four in just 23 appearances across all competitions. Mourinho is understood to be impressed with the goal scoring ability of the player. Signing the midfielder would allow Manchester United to part away with Michael Carrick, who is yet to sign a new contract with the club. The club have reportedly asked the defensive midfielder to take a huge pay cut in order to receive a one-year contract, but Carrick may prefer retirement instead of playing for less wages.
