Manchester United suffer transfer blow as Marcelo Brozovic snubs interest to sign new Inter Milan contract

As confirmed by The Sun, Inter Milan have tied down their midfielder Marcelo Brozovic to a new contract, in what is a transfer blow to Manchester United who were keen on signing the player in the summer.

Brozovic, who has been at Inter since 2015, committed his long-term future with the Italian club by penning a new deal with the side that keeps him in Milan until June 2026.

Man United were keen on snapping up the midfielder for free in the summer, with the 29-year-old seemingly out of contract at the end of the season. However, after months of negotiations, the Croatian has agreed to stay at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza for a few more years.

The Red Devils are not the only side to suffer a transfer blow regarding Brozovic’s stay in Italy, with the player also linked to Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, Atletico Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United ahead of the summer transfer window.

Bumper contract for Brozovic

The Old Trafford side were keen on adding a defensive midfielder to their ranks, given that they only have one senior star in Nemanja Matic who is accustomed to playing in that role. At 33 however, it is not known how long the veteran will last and a younger replacement was eyed in Brozovic.

However, the Croatia international has chosen to continue his career in Serie A, signing a new bumper contract that sees him earn a massive £104,000-per-week. Along with this, an extra £830,000 is available to the star in the form of annual bonuses.

At 29, the player is arguably in the prime of his career, and will look to push on after winning the Serie A title with the Nerazzurri last season and a Supercoppa Italiana this campaign. With Inter looking to win a successive Scudetto title this term, the club will rely on their trusty midfield general to help them out with this task.

Brozovic has been one of the most consistent and reliable performers for the Italian club in recent years, with his presence in midfield ensuring that the side do not leak goals and have a lynchpin in the middle of the park to thwart the opposition attack.

Midfield is an area that Man United are keen to improve in the summer, with the current crop of stars that the club have unable to impose themselves in games and dictate the tempo. Brozovic would have made a fine addition to the Red Devils midfield, with his experience at club and international level seeing them through a difficult time.

With the Croatian signing a new deal with his employers, it is time for us to look at other possible transfer targets to bolster our midfield. With a new permanent manager coming to the club in the summer, it will be interesting to see how he goes about fixing our issues in the middle of the pitch.
