Manchester United have invited former Aberdeen goalie Joe Lewis to first-team training

Former Aberdeen goalkeeper Joe Lewis has been invited to first-team training at Manchester United by manager Erik ten Hag. The 36-year-old shot-stopper, who departed Aberdeen last summer, has been without a club and is seeking to maintain his fitness levels.

That is as per The Express. Lewis’s involvement with the Manchester United squad began in December when he initially sought to use the club’s facilities to train.

Subsequently, he has been sporadically participating in first-team training sessions, occasionally filling in among the senior players when the team requires additional goalkeepers.

The veteran goalkeeper’s presence at Carrington has been noted alongside emerging talents like Dermot Mee and Kie Plumley, with the trio joining the squad in preparation for upcoming fixtures. Lewis’s involvement has extended to training sessions with players who didn’t feature in recent matches, underlining his integration into the squad dynamics.

Lewis to the Red Devils?

After making 272 appearances at Aberdeen wherein he kept 94 clean sheets, Joe Lewis left the club in July 2023 and now has an opportunity to contribute at Manchester United as a sporadic player.

The timing of Lewis’s potential opportunity at Manchester United coincides with uncertainty surrounding the goalkeeping department. With Tom Heaton expected to depart upon the expiration of his contract, there could be an opening for Lewis to secure a short-term deal if he impresses during his time at Carrington. Current goalkeepers include Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir apart from third-choice Heaton.

While Lewis’s age may raise eyebrows for some, his experience and desire to stay sharp suggest that he could offer valuable depth to the Manchester United squad. Moreover, his involvement in training sessions alongside established players reflects the club’s willingness to explore all options in bolstering their roster.

If Lewis can showcase his abilities and adaptability during his time with Manchester United, he may follow in the footsteps of Jonny Evans, who earned a short-term deal with the club under similar circumstances and has been pretty solid in the backline for Erik ten Hag. For now, Lewis’s presence adds an intriguing subplot to the club’s preparations as they navigate the challenges of the current season.
