Erik ten Hag answers why Rasmus Hojlund was subbed off during Manchester United vs West Ham
Rasmus Hojlund was looking to score his first Premier League goal for Manchester United on Saturday. But, much to his disappointment he was subbed off in the 57th minute.
Fans have been disappointed with the young striker. His inability to find the back of the net in the Premier League has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Even his goals in the Champions League haven’t been able to save him from the backlash.
But, Erik ten Hag has been fully supportive of the player. When he spoke after the loss to West Ham, the Dutchman even gave some insight into why he decided to take him off the field.
Let’s have a look at what the Red Devils’ chief had to say about his decision. (h/t The Sun)
“I think he’s a very strong character and he can deal with the stress. I took him off. He was ill during the week and so he had a little lack of power. So, yeah, in that sense, I protected him. We have to play two more games this week.”
It seems like Ten Hag’s decision was not because of Hojlund’s poor performance but instead because of his health. People have blamed the Denmark international but a look at some statistics shows that he isn’t as bad as people think he is.
According to a stat posted by The Sun, Hojlund has received the least amount of passes out of any striker in the Premier League. Moreover, Anthony Martial is right above him at second last.
This also means that Manchester United have just been very poor at creating chances. While it is true that Hojlund doesn’t make enough runs and doesn’t try to be disruptive. It is also true that the Old Trafford squad cannot create any meaningful chances.
