Marc Guehi questions critics of Manchester United star Harry Maguire for their lack of gratitude

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi asked people to look past their recency bias while judging Manchester United defender Harry Maguire. England manager Gareth Southgate’s decision to select Maguire received criticism due to lack of playing time at the club level.

United manager Erik ten Hag has enlisted Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as his first-choice centre-back pairing. The Dutchman took over the club last season and Maguire has played a limited amount of football for United since then.

The 30-year-old has been an important cog for England under Southgate and he has featured consistently in big tournaments. However, the lack of football for United has raised questions about his match fitness and capacity to perform for England.

Guehi talked to BBC Radio 5Live (h/t Manchester Evening News) about his international teammate and defended Maguire vehemently. He said:

“He is a top professional, a great guy to have around the camp, and one of the leaders, I think people forget things very quickly, but he was Manchester United captain, someone who has played for England at many, many top competitions and has helped the team and the nation to get where they are today.”

Maguire lost his captaincy at United over the summer due to his inability to impress Ten Hag. West Ham United made a £30 million bid for the England international during the transfer window. However, the deal fell through when they received no response from Maguire’s camp after reaching a price agreement

Maguire has only featured in four of the 11 matches played by the Red Devils in all competitions. During his appearances, he contributed one assist, and the team secured victories in the two games he started.

However, Manchester United has suffered six losses in these 11 matches, exposing vulnerabilities in their defence. The England international also sat on the bench for four matches and remained absent from the squad for three games.

The England international defended his Red Devils record while being with England on the October international break. He cited the high win rate for United with him in defence compared to the low win rate when he was unavailable.

Maguire’s future will be up for debate in 2024 as he needs regular football to continue playing for England. We think that the 30-year-old departure from Old Trafford will be mutually beneficial for both the player and the club. The Red Devils need to raise funds in order to sign players that fit the profile Ten Hag demands.
