Manchester United captain Bruno Fernades reveals his aspiration to play for Portugal at the 2030 World Cup.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes articulates his desire to compete for Portugal during the 2030 World Cup. The 29-year-old will be 35 years old by the time the 2030 World Cup event commences.
The United captain is aware of the amount of investment top European clubs are making to build young football stars. The Portugal international is expecting a rise in competition that puts pressure on the 29-year-old and his teammates.
Portugal beat Slovakia 3-2 in the EURO 2024 qualifier game to achieve the qualification in just seven matches. Fernandes’ team achieved qualification after winning all seven games in Group J while dominating all opponents.
Fernandes spoke to RTP (h/t Manchester Evening News) about the steep increase in competition for a place in the international squad.
“A place [in the squad] is getting more and more expensive. Clubs are investing in youth teams so that more players come [to the national team]. At that time [of the 2030 World Cup] it will be even more expensive, but, if I’m fit, and I’m at a level that is the minimum acceptable to be here, I hope to be here.”
United manager Erik ten Hag gave the captaincy to the 29-year-old during the summer. The Portugal international has been an important player for the Red Devils since signing from Sporting CP in January 2020.
Fernandes has featured in 10 matches for United in all competitions this season while contributing two goals and two assists. The Red Devils have struggled badly this season under the leadership of the 29-year-old, losing six out of 11 matches.
The Portuguese attacking midfielder has tried to help his club get out of their slumbering start to the season. Fernandes scored an incredible goal against Burnley in late September to win the Premier League game 0-1.
