There were shades of Camp Nou at Old Trafford on Saturday night as an Erik ten Hag inspired Manchester United came from behind to stun Brentford in injury time.

While the result lacked the same gravitas as our comeback against Bayern Munich in 1999, it could yet prove to be a defining moment in our season. A fifth loss in eight Premier League games had every potential to derail our season.

Mathias Jensen’s first-half goal was an all too familiar sight for Manchester United as they once again failed to come out all guns firing. They were likely to suffer another defeat before Scott McTominay came off the bench to turn the tide.

Ten Hag brought on McTominay in the 87th minute and he delivered in the third minute of stoppage time, volleying home after Diogo Dalot saw his attempt saved. Relief turned into hysteria four minutes later as the Scotsman popped up to put the ball in the net and send Old Trafford wild.

Speaking after the game, Ten Hag was understandably thrilled and believes the win could be the turning moment for the club this season. Manchester United now have a rallying point from which they can hope to build momentum and push on. This is what he had to say while talking to MUTV and other broadcasters via the club’s official website.

“This must be the turning point. This reflects our season so far from the start of a game. It has to be that you believe and you see the fans believe: they are sticking together.”

The Red Devils boss also called for greater consistency and called on his side to not switch off in matches. The Dutchman remains confident that the team can achieve much as long as their attitude reflects their ambitions.

“We can’t switch off in moments in the game. So we have to be more consistent in the attitude and that approach. And when we get that, I’m sure this team will get success.”

While Manchester United have every reason to believe the win can turn their season around, the result glosses over quite a few major weaknesses in the side. Unless they are addressed, Ten Hag and Co will always be reliant on someone pulling a rabbit out of a hat- an unsustainable approach over the course of a season.
