Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag feels restricted while giving criticism to his squad

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is holding back in his criticism towards the squad according to ESPN (h/t Express). The Dutchman is concerned about the ‘mental fragility of the squad’ whenever he tries to relay the truth over the performances.

United are currently 10th in the Premier League table after playing seven games so far this season. The Red Devils have suffered four losses in the competition.

Simultaneously, Ten Hag’s team is yet to register a win in the Champions League. United lost two of the Group A fixtures played so far, against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.

Ten Hag has criticised (h/t Express) his squad’s body language after the loss against Galatasaray on Tuesday. He said:

“We have to do better that is the case, but we have to show it, even in our body language.”

The 53-year-old has faced criticism for the way he has dealt with high-profile players during his considerably early United reign.

The Dutchman had a fallout with Cristiano Ronaldo as the superstar declared he has “no respect” for Ten Hag. United terminated Ronaldo’s contract with mutual consent as a result of the insubordination.

Similarly, Ten Hag clashed with Jadon Sancho earlier in the season after publicly criticising the Englishman’s training performance. The 23-year-old retaliated by accusing the United manager of using him as a scapegoat.

Sancho currently faces a ban from using first-team facilities as he trains away from the squad. Telegraph reported the 23-year-old feels that he is a victim of double standards by the manager. Ten Hag will not lift the banishment until Sancho apologises as the Englishman refuses to bow down to the demand.

We believe that Ten Hag’s honesty is one of the strong characteristics that served him well in his previous clubs. However, things are very different while managing a big club with different personalities and highly reputed players.

The Dutchman was successful with Ajax as the youngsters are more receptive to the high volume of criticism. The situation is not similar to what he is dealing with at United. Ten Hag would need to adapt his method in delivering constructive criticism and dealing with individuals at Carrington.
