Fichajes reports that Everton are targeting Manchester United defender Harry Maguire to upgrade their squad in the January transfer window.

The 30-year-old is currently down the pecking order at United, behind first-choice defenders Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

Maguire played the full game to help United register a 3-0 victory against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup third round. The England international performed impressively at Old Trafford as the Red Devils kept a third clean sheet of the season.

The Englishman has faced torrid times at United due to his inconsistent performances since signing from Leicester City.

England manager Gareth Southgate has maintained his trust in Maguire but cautioned him that consistent play is essential for consideration in the upcoming Euro 2024.

The Red Devils accepted a £30m offer for the 30-year-old from West Ham United during the summer transfer window. However, the deal fell through as the player and the club could not come to terms with his exit.

Maguire vowed to fight for the first-team place at United, even though the club informed him that his playing time would face limitations.

United signed Jonny Evans during the summer transfer window to be the backup for their defence. The 35-year-old gave a strong performance for the Red Devils against Burnley in their last Premier League game. Everton is waiting for the possible acquisition from 777 Partners with hopes of getting the funding to strengthen their team.

The Merseyside club is currently lying in 15th position in the Premier League after six games with only one win. Everton have not kept a single clean sheet in all competition this season proving their vulnerability in the defensive line.

Maguire’s experience and leadership could serve as a much-needed catalyst for Everton’s rejuvenation. Meanwhile, United would benefit from offloading the high wages they currently pay Maguire, making him a costly backup. It’s unclear if all parties will embrace what seems to be a mutually beneficial business deal.
