Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson sounds out a warning to Manchester United

From beginning to end, Erik ten Hag’s team dominated, but the opposition posed little challenge. When Crystal Palace visit Old Trafford to face Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday, Roy Hodgson anticipates his team to “give a better account” of themselves.

Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup third-round match between Manchester United and Crystal Palace was easily won 3-0 by the Red Devils thanks to goals from Alejandro Garnacho, Casemiro, and Anthony Martial. After the game, Hodson told Sky Sports (h/t Manchester Evening News) :

“We have to accept that today, our hopes and wishes were too strong for us to be able to bring some reality to it. Then we have to accept that we are out of the Carabao Cup and United go on. We’ve now got a few days to lick our wounds so when we come up on Saturday, we can give a better account of ourselves.”

There are plenty of positives that any United fan can take at the moment. Sofyan Amrabat got his first United starting line-up space and he was phenomenal throughout the fixture. However, Palace rested quite a few stars and will pose more of a challenge at the weekend.

Mason Mount came back from injury and assisted Casemiro to score United’s second goal of the night. Lastly, Anthony Martial also ended his goal-scoring drought to give our team the third goal, marking Palaces’ end in this competition.

With the much-needed victory, United once again expects to show a similar show at the same venue on Saturday. Dropping any points at the weekend will more or less kill the winning momentum that is slowly yet steadily building.

Hodgson is certainly talking big after the humbling but given that he rested several players, there could be a point there. Manchester United dominated but will face a bigger challenge against the likes of Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze among others.

Manchester United will need to be more convincing, especially against teams who are inferior to them in terms of quality. Ten Hag will need to take it one game at a time and the immediate priority will be to let Hodgson enjoy his just desserts.
